ENERGY & ARCHITETCURE
(ARC61904)
Module Synopsis
The module will provide students a comprehensive understanding of how energy is used in buildings. Hence, will introduce principles and ways to achieve energy efficiency in environmental systems operation, renewable energy technology and architectural design features.
Module Teaching Objectives
The teaching objective of the module is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of energy usage and energy efficiency methods in buildings and architecture.
Module Learning Outcomes
-
Describe the impact of the built environment on the global scene and understand energy demands in buildings
-
Identify the principles of energy efficient systems in architecture and building technology
-
Apply strategies of renewable energy to deliver low energy architectural design
PROJECT 1A:
Low Energy building Analysis (Group)
Students (group of 3) are to select a precedent study of Low Energy Building/Net Zero (Residential/Hospitality/Institution/Office/Commercial) of their choice from an existing building locally or internationally (approved by the Tutors).
PROJECT 1B:
Energy Efficient Green Building Site Visit (Group)
Students (group of 3) are to conduct a site visit to a few recognized energy efficient green buildings of their choice. Students can choose to visit a publicly accessible site in Malaysia
PROJECT 2:
Energy Audit E-Report (Individual)
Students are required to carry out a walk-through Audit process of your own home and produce an Audit report (Individual) on the existing and to propose strategies to achieve energy savings through focus on specific topics (Passive Cooling/Lighting, Retrofitting Lighting system with LED light source/dimmer, Effective Waste Management, Controlling Heat/Glare with Façade or device) to achieve energy efficiency
