PROJECT 1:
Famous Architect’s building Materials Application: Architectural and Structural

OBJECTIVES:

  • TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN ARCHITECTURAL AND STRUCTURAL MATERIALS

  • TO DESCRIBE TYPES OF BUILDINGS MATERIALS USED FOR BUILDINGS

  • TO DEMONSTRATE THE INSTALLATION OF BUILDING MATERIALS ON BUILDINGS

IN THIS ASSESSMENT, WERE REQUIRED TO CHOOSE ONE OF THE FAMOUS ARCHITECTS OUT OF MANY IN THE PROJECT BRIEF. THEN, WE WERE EXPECTED TO CHOOSE ONE OF THE FAMOUS BUILDING FROM THE SELECTED ARCHITECT, WE NEEDED TO STUDY THE CONTEXT OF THE BUILDING AND ALSO IDENTIIFY THE MATERIAL USED OF THE BUILDING. WE WERE REQUIRED TO DIFFERENCIATE ARCHITECTURAL AND STRUCTURAL MATERIALS FROM THE BUILDING AND UNDERSTAND THE REASONING OF THE CHOICE OF MATERIALS USED IN THE BUILDING TOGATHER WITH THIER CHARACTER, PROPERTIES, THE INFLUENCE, AND THE IINSTALLATION OF ON THE BUILDING DESIGN IN GENERAL. LASTLY, WE WERE REQUIRED TO COMPILE ALL THE FINDINGS AND RESEARCH INTO 2 A3 SIZE IN PDF FORM.

COMMENTS FOR THE PROJECT: 
FIRST, I HAD CHOSEN DANIEL LIBESKIND FOR THIS PROJECT, HE IS ONE OF THE FAMOUS ARCHITECTS LISTED IN THE BRIEF. THEN, I STARTED TO DO RESEARCH ONLINE ABOUT THE FAMOUS BUILDINGS DESIGNED BY HIM, I CHOSE ROYAL ONTARIO MUSEUM OUT OF MANY BUILDINGS. THE BEAUTY OF THE BUILDING AND THE MATERIAL USED OF THE BUILDINGS ARE THE REASONS THAT I CHOSE THIS BUILDING. I FOUND A LOT OF INFORMATION ONLINE THROUGH WEBSITES AND LITERATURE, I WAS ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE ARCHITECTURAL AND STRUCTURAL BUILDING MATERIALS OF THE BUILDING. BESIDES, I LEARNED ABOUT THE INSTALLATION OF THE MATERIAL OF THE BUILDING, WHICH HELP ME TO UNDERSTAND MORE ABOUT THE DETAILS OF THE BUILDING. I'M GLAD TO HAVE THIS EXPERIENCE AS IT HELPS ME TO HAVE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING ON THE BUILDING MATERIALS.








 

PROJECT 2:
CONSTRUCTION DETAILING OF BUILDING ELEMENTS
 

OBJECTIVES:​

  • TO DEVELOP AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS IN CONSTRUCTION AND ITS APPLICATION IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY.

  • TO DEMONSTRATE CONSTRUCTION MANUAL DRAWING.

  • TO DEMONSTRATE AWARENESS OF HOW BUILDINGS ARE DEVELOPED IN RESPONSE TO PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

  • TO ALLOW STUDENTS TO DEMONSTRATE THEIR UNDERSTANDING AND KNOWLEDGE OF CONSTRUCTION, MATERIAL, AND TECHNOLOGY

IN THIS ASSESSMENT, WE WERE REQUIRED TO WORK AS A GROUP TO HAVE RESEARCH ON BUILDING CONSTRUCTION. I'M IN A GROUP OF 7 PEOPLE, WE WERE REQUIRED TO PRODUCE DRAWINGS AND MODELS OF A TIMBER BUILDING. WE WERE EXPECTED TO HAVE RESEARCH AND PRODUCE THE DRAWINGS OF A DOUBLE STROEY TIMBER HOUSE, AND MUST INCLUDE FLOOR, WALL, DOOR, WINDOW, STARICASE AND ETC, TO SHOW THE CONSTRUCTION AND THE DETAILS OF THE BUILDING. AT LAST, WE WERE EXPECTED TO PRODUCE A PHYSICAL MODEL TO SHOWCASE THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE TIMBER BUILDING, THEN WE NEEDED TO COMPILE ALL OF OUR DRAWINGS INTO A PDF FILE FOR FINAL SUBMISSION.

COMMENTS FOR THE PROJECT: 
AT FIRST, I FELT QUITE CONFUSED ABOUT THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE TIMBER BUILDING, BUT I WAS ABLE TO HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONSTRUCTION THROUGH ONLINE RESEARCH AND STUDIES FROM THE LECTURE SLIDES. WE HAD CHOSEN A DOUBLE-STOREY TIMBER HOUSE IN MALAYSIA FOR THIS PROJECT, WE STUDY THE CONSTRUCTION AND PRODUCE THE DRAWINGS WHILE TAKING THE ONLINE INFORMATION AS OUR REFERENCES. THEN, WE SEPARATE OURSELVES INTO DIFFERENT WORKS TO PRODUCE DRAWINGS OF THE TIMBER BUILDING. ALL OF US WORK ON DIFFERENT DRAWINGS CONTINUOUSLY AND COMPILE ALL THE DRAWINGS TOGETHER WHEN WE ARE ALL DONE. AT LAST, WE WORK ON THE PHYSICAL MODEL TO SHOWCASE THE CONSTRUCTION AND DETAILS OF THE TIMBER BUILDING, WE CHOSE THE SECTION TO SHOW THE INNER CONSTRUCTION OF THE BUILDING. IT WAS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE WHILE GOING THROUGH THIS PROJECT AS I LEARNED A LOT ABOUT THE CONSTRUCTION OF A REAL HOUSE AND ALSO THE DETAILS IN THE DRAWINGS.
