PROJECT 1:
Case Study – Passive Building Design:
Assessing Daylight & Thermal Comfort at Modern Houses

OBJECTIVES:

  • TO IDENTITY ISSUES RELATED TO DAYLIGHTING AND THERMAL COMFORT AT DOUBLE STOREY TERRACED / SEMI-DETACHED HOUSES.

  • TO ACCESS THE CURRENT CONDITION OF DAYLIGHT DISTRIBUTION AND THERMAL COMFORT AT DOUBLE STOREY TERRACED / SEMI-DETACHED HOUSES.

  • TO FORMULATE IDEAS IN ADDRESSING ISSUES ON DAYLIGHTING AND THERMAL COMFORT AT DOUBLE STOREY TERRACED / SEMI-DETACHED HOUSES BY INCORPORATING PASSIVE DESIGN APPROACHES.

IN THIS ASSESSMENT, WE WERE REQUIRED TO FORM A GROUP OF 6 PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT SEMESTERS AND ALSO DIFFERENT PROGRAMMES. AFTER THE TEAM FORMED, WE SELECTED A CORNER LOT OF A DOUBLE-STOREY TERRACED HOUSE AS OUR CASE STUDY. THE CHOSEN HOUSE IS FROM ONE OF OUR MEMBER'S HOUSES, IT WAS LOCATED IN KUCHING, SARAWAK. OUR STUDIES ARE MAINLY AROUND DAYLIGHTING AND THERMAL COMFORT. AT FIRST, WE COLLECTED DATA AND STATISTICS FROM THE SITE AND COMPILE THEM INTO A GRAPH TO SHOWCASE THE CLIMATE CHANGE IN THAT AREA. FOR EXAMPLE, DATA SUCH AS SUN PATH CHART, PRECIPITATIONS, TEMPERATURE, ETC. WE WERE REQUIRED TO RECORD LUX METER AND TEMPERATURE AT DIFFERENT TIME. BESIDES, WE WERE REQUIRED TO IDENTIFY THE ISSUES OF DAYLIGHTING AND THERMAL COMFORT OF THE SELECTED SPACES.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • TWO A2 SIZE BOARDS

  • SKECTHES OF SUGGESTED IDEAS FOR DAYLIGHTING AND THERMAL COMFORT

  • ENVIRONMENTAL DATA

  • RELEVANT PHOTOS OF SITE

  • FLOOR LAYOUT

        - LOCATION PLAN

        - FLOOR PLANS

        - 2 ELEVATIONS

        - 1 SECTION

  • REFERENCES

COMMENTS FOR THE PROJECT:
I HAD LEARNED A LOT FROM THIS PROJECT AS I HAD SPENT TIME TO STUDY ABOUT THE DAYLIGHTING AND THERMAL COMFORT, I'M GLAD TO HAVE A CHANCE TO STUDY ABOUT THE IMPORTANCES OF DAYLIGHT FACTORS AND THE THERMAL COMFORT OF A HOUSE, I LEARNED TO USE PASSIVE DESIGN ON HOUSES AND HOW TO DESIGN THE HOUSE WITH PASSIVE DESIGN IDEAS. BESIDES, I LEARNED TO ANALYSE THE ENVIRONMENT THROUGH DATA COLLECTION AND USE THE ADVANTAGES OF ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS, I LEARNED TO USE THE NATURAL FACTORS LIKE SUNLIGHT AND WIND. I'M ALSO VERY GRATEFUL TO HAVE A VERY UNITED TEAM AND WORKING ON OUR PROJECT CONTINUOUSLY, WE MANAGED TO COMPLETE ALL THE WORKLOAD AND SUBMITTED ON TIME.

PROJECT 2:
Artificial Lighting Design Layout: LUMEN METHOD

OBJECTIVES:

  • TO LEARN THE EFFECTIVE / SUITABLE DESIGN LAYOUT OF ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING (GENERAL LIGHTING)

  • TO DEMONSTRATE THE UNDERSTANDING IN CHOOSING THE TYPE OF LIGHTING FITTINGS FOR GENERAL LIGHTING

  • TO IDENTIFY OTHER TYPES OF LIGHTING THAT CAN COMPLEMENT THE GENERAL LIGHTING AT A SPECIFIC INDOOR SPACE

IN THIS ASSESSMENT, WE WERE REQUIRED TO WORK CONTINUOUSLY WITH THE PREVIOUS GROUP FROM PROJECT 1. WE WERE REQUIRED TO CHOOSE ONE INDOOR SPACE OUT OF MANY THAT HAD BEEN LISTED IN THE BRIEF, OUR GROUP SELECTED A BOUTIQUE (DISPLAY AREA) AS OUR STUDY SPACE. WE CHOOSE THE 2ND STREET BUNDLE SHOP IN SS15 AS OUR STUDY SPACE, WE ALSO WENT FOR A SITE VISIT TO DISCOVER THE STRATEGIES THAT ENCOURAGE EFFECTIVE ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN PRINCIPLES AND BUILDING PRACTICES. WE WERE REQUIRED TO CALCULATE THE NUMBER OF LAMPS REQUIRED THROUGH THE LUMEN METHOD. OTHER THAN THAT, WE WERE REQUIRED TO USE OUR STUDIES ON ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING AND APPLIED IT AS SUGGESTED IDEAS FOR OUR CHOSEN SPACES.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • TWO A2 SIZE BOARDS

  • BUILDING BACKGROUND

  • OVERALL FLOOR LAYOUT

  • REFLECTED CEILING PLAN WITH PROPOSED GENERAL LIGHTING LAYOUT

  • CROSS SECTION

  • 2 SKETCHES OF PROPOSED IDEAS FOR GENERAL LIGHTINGS FOR THE CHOSEN SPACE

  • LUMEN METHOD CALCULATIONS

  • REFERENCES

COMMENTS FOR THE PROJECT:
THROUGHOUT THIS PROJECT, I LEARNED TO USE THE LUMEN METHOD TO CALCULATE THE REQUIRED NUMBER OF LAMPS IN THAT SPACE. I STUDIED ABOUT THE USE OF ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING IN THE DISPLAY AREA AND THE IMPORTANCE OF USING DIFFERENT TYPES OF LIGHTS IN PARTICULAR SPACES. I LEARNED TO IDENTIFY THE ISSUES OF ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING IN THAT SPACES AND PROVIDE SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS TO ENHANCE THE USING OF LIGHTS IN THAT PARTICULAR AREA. IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW HOW TO IDENTIFY THE FUNCTION OF LIGHTS SO WE CAN APPLY DIFFERENT TYPES OF LIGHTS FOR THAT PARTICULAR AREA. I'M GLAD THAT EVERY MEMBER TRY THEIR BEST TO CONTRIBUTE TO THIS PROJECT, AND FINALLY COMPLETE THE PROJECT ON TIME AND WAS SATISFIED.
