THEOTY OF ASIAN ARCHITECTURE
PROJECT 1:
Contextual Study Sketch Journal of a Traditional Street
IN THIS ASSESSMENT, WE WERE REQUIRED TO WORK INDIVIDUALLY AND CHOOSE A STREET BETWEEN CHINATOWN, KAMPUNG BHARU, CHOW KIT, AND MALACCA, THERE WERE SEVERAL STREETS IN THESE FOUR AREAS BUT WE WERE ONLY REQUIRED TO CHOOSE ONE OUT OF MANY. AFTER GOING THROUGH SOME ONLINE RESEARCH FOR THE SELECTED STREET, WE WERE REQUIRED TO HAVE A SITE VISIT TO THE CHOSEN STREET. WE WERE REQUIRED TO IDENTIFY THE PHYSICAL AND NON-PHYSICAL CONTEXT OF THE STREET DURING THE SITE VISIT AND ALSO THE RESEARCH. FOR EXAMPLE, THE PHYSICAL CONTEXT INCLUDED RELIGIOUS BUILDINGS, SHOPHOUSES, AND ARCHITECTURE FACADES. WHILE NON-PHYSICAL CONTEXT INCLUDED TRADITIONAL TRADES/BUSINESS, LOCAL/TRADITIONAL CUISINES, HISTORICAL EVENTS, AND SOCIAL INSTITUTIONS.
THEN, WE WERE REQUIRED TO MANUALLY DRAW 8 PAGES OF SKETCHES IN A4 SIZE WITH A CONCLUSION ARCCORDING TO OUR FINDINGS. OUR REFERENCES WERE MOSTLY FROM BOOKS, WEBSITES AND ARTICLES.
REQUIREMENTS:
-
ONE-HANDED-SKETCHED SITE PLAN SHOWING THE DEFINED BOUNDARY OF THE STREET
-
SKETCHES SHOWING AN UNDERSTANDING OF DISTINCTIVE PHYSICAL AND NON-PHYSICAL CONTEXT OF THE STREET
EXPLORATION OF A VARIETY OF MEDIA (PENCIL, PEN, MARKERS, CHARCOAL, OR WATERCOULOUR) -
CAPTIONS AND ANNOTATIONS
-
ONE PAGE WITH 300 WORDS HAND-WRITTEN SUMMARY OF YOUR OBSERVATION
COMMENTS FOR THE PROJECT:
AFTER I HAD COMPLETED THE PROJECT, I HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ARCHITECTURE AND ITS SOCIAL, CULTURAL, AND INTELLECTUAL CONTEXT WITHIN THE ASIAN REGION. SKILLS THAT HAD IMPROVED FROM THIS PROJECT WERE THE OBSERVATION SKILLS, DRAWING SKILLS, AND THE RESEARCH SKILLS. I FELT GRATEFUL TO HAVE A CHANCE TO GO FOR A SITE VISIT AND TO HAVE A BETTER VIEW AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE STREET. I HAD A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF THE CULTURE AND THE HISTORY OF THE STREET. THEREFORE, THERE WAS STILL ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT SUCH AS TIME MANAGEMENT ON THE PROJECT, THE SKETCHES COULD BE WELL DRAWN AND RENDERED MORE NICELY IF I HAD A BETTER PLANNING AND TIME MANAGEMENT.HOWEVER, I LEARNED THE OUTCOMES OF THIS PROJECT AND WAS ABLE TO COMPLETE THE WORK ON TIME.
PROJECT 2:
Poster and Seminar-Contemporary Issues in Asian Architecture
IN THIS ASSESSMENT, WE ARE REQUIRED TO WORK AS A GROUP TO IDENTIFY A SIGNIFICANT ISSUE FROM THE SELECTED STREET IN PROJECT 1 AMONG OUR GROUP MEMBERS. WE WERE REQUIRED TO EXPAND OUR STUDY ON ONE OF THE TOPICS BETWEEN (ARCHITECTURE AND PLACE IDENTITY, ADAPTIVE REUSE OF TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE, SUSTAINABLE HERITAGE TOURISM, AND CULTURE SPACE IN CITIES).
AFTER WE HAD SET OUR DIRECTION OF STUDY, WE WERE THEN MOVE ON TO IDENTIFY SPECIFIC ISSUES IN THE SELECTED STREET AND PROVIDES POSSIBLE SOLUTION FOR THEM. AFTER THAT, WE WERE REQUIRED TO PROVIDE A TITLE FOR OUR RESEARCH AND FIND CASE STUDIES TO PRODUCE A RESEARCH POSTER. THEN, WE WERE REQUIRED TO SUBMIT OUR TOPIC PROPOSAL TO OUR LECTURER TO A CHECK ON OUR FINDINGS. AFTER COLLECTING ALL THE DATA, WE COMPILE ALL THE INFORMATION INTO THE POSTER.
THE NEXT TASK WAS TO PRODUCE A 10 MINS VIDEO PRESENTATION OF OUR FINDINGS AND RESEARCH. WE HAD TO PREPARE PRESENTATION SLIDES AND RECORD FOR OUR VIDEO PRESENTATION TO EXPLAIN ABOUT OUR RESEARCH IN THE END.
REQUIREMENTS:
-
TOPIC PROPOSAL
-
A1 RESEARCH POSTER
-
10MINS VIDEO PRESENTATION

COMMENTS FOR THE PROJECT:
AFTER I HAD COMPLETED THIS PROJECT, I HAD TO INTERPRET SIGNIFICANT ISSUES ABOUT THE DEVELOPMENT OF CONTEMPORARY ASIAN ARCHITECTURE BASED ON THEMES OF TRADITION, MODERNITY, AND GLOBALISATION. BESIDES, I LEARNED TO RESEARCH USING GOOGLE SCHOLAR AND ALSO GIVE CREDIT TO THOSE REFERENCES THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT. I LEARNED A LOT FROM CASE STUDIES THAT WE HAD FOUND TO COMPARE WITH OUR STUDIES OF THE STREET. IT WAS GREAT TO HAVE THIS PROJECT FOR ME TO HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF HOW TO RESEARCH STEP BY STEP AND PRODUCED THE FINAL PRODUCTS OF OUR RESEARCH THROUGH LOTS OF PROCESSES AND DISCUSSIONS.
REGARDING WHAT COULD BE DONE BETTER DURING THIS PROJECT, OUR GROUP HAD A HARD TIME ON COMMUNICATING WITH EACH OTHER DUE TO THE LACK OF PARTICIPATION FROM A FEW OF THE GROUP MEMBERS. FROM THIS SITUATION, I LEARNED TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS WITH THE GROUP MEMBERS AND HOW TO WORK AS A TEAM. ALTHOUGH I HAD TO KICK TWO OF THE MEMBERS OUT OF THE GROUP DUE TO NO PARTICIPATIONS AND CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE GROUP AND LEFT OUR GROUP WITH 4 MEMBERS, WE STILL MANAGED TO COMPLETE THE TASKS AND ASSIGNMENTS ON TIME. SO I HOPE TO HAVE BETTER TEAMWORK AND COMMUNICATION WITH GROUP MEMBERS TO PRODUCE THE WORK NICELY AS A TEAM.
