PROJECT 3:
Designing with Architectural Principles + Materiality + Context + User: Tropical Wildlife Discovery Unit

METHODOLOGY:                                                                                   SITE: BUKIT JALIL RECREATIONAL PARK
1) LARGE GROUP TASKS - SITE DATA COLLECTION (MACRO SITE)

  • SITE LAYOUT

  • CLIMATIC STUDIES

  • NATURAL PHYSICAL FEATURES

  • EXISTING MAN-MADE STRUCTURE

  • CIRCULATION PATTERN

  • HUMAN ACTIVITIES

  • SENSORY STUDIES

2) SMALL GROUP & INDIVIDUAL TASKS - DIAGRAMMING SITE ANALYSIS USING DESIGN VIGNETTES (MICRO SITE)

  • DESIGN RESPONSE VIGNETTES MATRIX (SMALL GROUP TASK)

  • SITE USE ALTERNATIVES (INDIVIDUAL TASK)

3) INDIVIDUAL TASK - DESIGNING TROPICAL WILDLIFE  DISCOVERY UNIT

OBJECTIVES:

  • TO INTRODUCE THE NOTIONS OF CONCEPTS, PROGRAM AND PROCESS IN ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

  • TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF USER SPECIFIC DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

  • TO INTRODUCE THE NOTIONS OF SPACE, FORM AND FUNCTION IN ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

  • TO INTRODUCE AWARENESS OF SITE-SPECIFIC DESIGN AND THE PROCESS OF SITE ANALYSIS

OUTCOMES:

  • INTERPRET AND ANALYSE SIMPLE SITE CONTEXT

  • INTERPRET AND ANALYSE USERS' CHARACTERS AND NEEDS IN RELATION TO THE DESIGN OF A SMALL STRUCTURE

  • DESIGN A SIMPLE BUILDING TYPE THAT MEETS USER REQUIREMENTS AND RESPECT SITE CONTEXT

IN THIS ASSESSMENT, WE WERE REQUIRED TO WORK INDIVIDUALLY TO DESIGN A TROPICAL WILDLIFE DISCOVERY UNIT AT BUKIT JALIL RECREATIONAL PARK. AT FIRST, WE WERE REQUIRED TO STUDY AND ANALYSE THE SITE AS A BIG GROUP WITH ALL THE STUDENTS IN SEM 2 OF ARCHITECTURE. AFTER THAT, WE WERE REQUIRED TO WORK IN SMALL GROUP TO PRODUCE THE DESIGN PESONSE VIGNETTES MATRIX. THEN, WE WOULD HAVE TO PRODUCE OUR SITE USE ALTERNATIVES IN ORDER TO HELP US IN THE NEXT TASK, WHICH IS DESIGNING A TROPICAL WILDLIFE DISCOVERY UNIT. OUR MAXIMUM BUILT-UP SPACE IS ONLY 100SQM AND WE NEED TO INCLUDE ANOTHER DISCOVERY USER WITH ME TO SPEND A SHORT TIME IN THE DESIGNED UNIT. WE WERE EXPECTED TO PRODUCE OUR DESIGN INTENTIONS, DESIGN STRATEGICS, USER STUDIES, AND ETC TO SHOWCASE OUR WORKS TO THE AUDIENCE.

COMMENTS FOR THE PROJECT:
I FELT VERY GRATEFUL TO HAVE THIS CHANCE TO EXPERIENCE THE WHOLE PROCESS FROM A SITE VISIT TO DESIGNING A TROPICAL WILDLIFE DISCOVERY UNIT. STARTING FROM COLLECTING DATA AT THE BUKIT JALIL RECREATIONAL PARK, I LEARN TO OBSERVE AND INVESTIGATE THE ENVIRONMENT. THEN, I LEARN TO PRODUCE SITE RESPONSE VIGNETTES AND SITE USE ALTERNATIVES, WHICH HELP ME TO HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE SITE AND HOW TO DESIGN YOUR UNIT ACCORDING TO THE SELECTED SITE. I LEARNED A LOT DURING THE TUTORIAL SESSIONS AS I HAVE SEVERAL DISCUSSIONS WITH MY LECTURER TO IMPROVE ON THE DESIGN AND ORGANIZATION OF MY BUILDING. DURING THE FINAL PRESENTATION, I RECEIVED THE COMMENTS FROM THE GUESTS AND I LEARNED FROM MY MISTAKES TOO. THE BIGGEST OUTCOMES FROM THIS PROJECT ARE UNDERSTANDING OF THE USER EXPERIENCE AT THE UNIT AND DETAILS IN THE BUILDINGS. I BELIEVED THAT THERE ARE STILL LOTS OF IMPROVEMENTS TO BE MADE, AS I NEED TO KEEP WORKING HARD AND CONTINUOUSLY LEARN FROM OTHERS.
